It’s one of the most popular places to visit in Hurghada for a reason. If you are even a little bit interested in culture, religion or architecture El Mina mosque is worth visiting. It’s the biggest and most impressive mosque and building in Hurghada.
I went to visit El Mina mosque in Hurghada for the first time about a year ago. Though it has been open since January 2012. I was planning to visit there for years, but there was always something else when I was about to go for a visit.
When my friend came to visit me in Hurghada, I had to take her there. It was our first visit to a mosque, and we both were looking forward to it. –How does it look like there? -How does it differ from a church? -Or does it?
For me, mosques represented something mystic and reminded me of Arabian Nights especially Aladdin from my childhood.
NEXT: A DRESS CODE FOR THE MOSQUE
HOW TO DRESS FOR A MOSQUE? A DRESS CODE FOR THE MOSQUE
I knew that women need to cover themselves to get inside the mosque. We had no idea where to get dresses from, How things work there or what to do or expect. First, we went and walked around the mosque trying to find someone to get something to wear on.
Finally, we found a small booth, where you can loan a dress for yourself. Practically woman needs to cover their hair, shoulders and knees in the mosque. You can also wear your own scarf and clothes unless you follow the dress code.
Last time I passed the mosque, I noticed that they have built new bigger booths left the side of the mosque. This is where you get your dress before going inside. Also, men have a “dress code,” they are expected to wear long pants.
Neither men or women aren’t allowed to use shoes inside the mosque.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO VISIT EL MINA MOSQUE?
It looked like most of the tourists went to visit the mosque with a guide, which we obviously didn’t have with us. I think we could have got much more out of our visit If we had a guide with us. My advice to you is to get a guide, if possible.
We just followed one tourist group and copied everything that they did and didn’t have any clue what to do. On the other hand, visiting there without a guide made situation somehow more excited. I felt like I was a teenager and did something wrong behind my mothers’ back.
Maybe it was due to the situation, where you are in a religious place, and you have no idea how to act or what to do. The last thing you want to do is to be disrespectful. All in all, we managed well, but a guide would have made the situation so much easier for us.
Next time I will definitely visit El Mina mosque with a guide (if possible), as an architecture lover I wanted to hear more about the building and Islamic architecture, which is amazing.
The building is a very massive and impressive complex and you have access only to a small part of it. But from that part you get to see How does it look like there and How does it differ churches; just for an example.
If you don’t have time to go inside (opening from 9.00-17.00), go and see it in the evening. El mina mosque Hurghada looks amazing with all the lights on.
Enjoy your visit.
